Extending your Thai Visa

There are a number of options when it comes to extending your Thai visa and this would depend on the type of visa you have in your passport. We will list the most common Thailand visa options and extension options. Thai Marriage Visa:

This visa is valid for 90 days once you enter Thailand and can be extended to 1 year at Thai Immigration if you meet the requirements for the visa extension. We have listed the requirements here.

Thai Retirement Visa:

This is a visa for those over the age of 50 and who meet the financial requirements as listed on this website. This extension is done at Thai immigration in Bangkok if the requirements are met and these requirements have been listed here.

Thai Tourist Visa:

This is a 60 day visa and can be extend at Thai immigration in Bangkok or Thai Immigration in Pattaya or Phuket if you pay the 1,900 THB fee for an additional 30 days or another extension of another 7 days. This has been listed here.

Thai Multiple Entry Visa:

These can be extended. If it is a marriage visa it is explained here. If it is a business visa it is explained here. The Business visa can only be extended with a work permit. The tourist visa can be extend for an additional 30 days after the first 60 days have lapsed. This is explained here.

  1. We are going to extend our Tourist single entry for the extra 30 days. After that we will be going to Cambodia. Can we apply for another tourist visa with multiple entries while in Cambodia? or what visa would we get when we arrive back in Bangkok? Looking at just staying another 90days in Bangkok.     1. You can apply for a 60-day tourist visa at the Thai embassy or consulate in Cambodia depending on your passport. You can then apply for a 30-day extension at an immigration office in Thailand as well as a multiple re-entry permit if you will be traveling in and out of Thailand within the 90-day period.

    I’m travelling Thailand on the 30 day tourist visa and plan on visiting Myanmar for a few weeks once this visa has expired. I am wondering if it’s possible to get anther 30 day free tourist visa when re-entering the country by land at Mae Sot?

    1. Your entry by land without a visa for 30 days will depend on your passport. If you are from the following countries, you may be allowed entry again without a visa for 30 days: USA, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.

    1. Yes, you can apply for a 30-day extension at Chiang Mai immigration at least 1 week before your visa expires.

      General requirements will be your passport, the application form for extension and the fee of 1,900THB.

  4. Currently have a Non-B visa which expires with my work permit October 31. I am leaving Thailand 21 days after that. Can I extend my current visa or do I have to change to a tourist visa? Also, if I change to a tourist visa do I have to leave the country and come back?

    1. Once your business visa and work permit have expired, you will need to immediately exit Thailand. If you wish to stay longer, you may apply for a tourist visa at a Thai embassy or consulate in a neighboring country.

    1. You cannot extend your visa. You must leave Thailand and re enter as tourist while you are looking for possible employment.

    1. I suggest you renew the visa on the last week of your permit to stay stamp. DO not wait until the end or last day of the visa.

    1. In some instances the visa on arrival can be extended for 7 days for a fee of 1900 baht. BUT we suggest that if you plan to stay longer than 15 days, you must MUST apply for a proper tourist visa from the Thai embassy in China.

  11. Hi my Non-b and work permit expires 8th of Sep. And our company is currently waiting for BOI gets approved, which they said it will be most likely approved at the end of the Sep.

    And I am planning to leave Thailand 13th of Sep and come back 23rd. In this case, is there any way I can apply 7 days extension visa? Between 8th and 13th, I have a guest so I can’t leave the country. :(

    1. Yes, you can file for 7 days extension of your current visa. However, once it expires and you left Thailand. You must apply for a new non immigrant visa from the Thai embassy before returning to Thailand.

  12. I broke my arm, I already extended my visa once at Chiang Mai for 30 days and was told by the immigration authority that I could extend it one more time in Chiang Mai for 7 days, after this time I am leaving the country for some time. Is this correct advice?

    1. Yes, that is correct. You can only extend it further for 7 days. If you require to stay longer, you may request for a letter from a doctor and apply for a longer extension. The immigration office may give you longer than 7 days if it is deemed necessary.

As the stamp on my passport for the leaving date is 15th of September, what’s the best thing to do? How can I extend my visa for one day if possible?

    1. You are able to extend this 30-day visa exemption stamp for another 30 days at the local immigration office. For the extension, you just have to submit one passport size photo (4cm x 6cm) with white background and pay the fee of 1,900 Thai baht. ANOTHER option is to overstay for 1 day and you just pay 500 baht at the airport.

    I’m an exchange student at Chulalongkorn University. I have an Education Visa Type S. However it expires on the 22th September. What kind of documents I need in order to extend my visa for another 3 months? And how long does it take until I get the new Visa.

    1. You need to check your university student affairs department and ask them to provide the school documents needed for an extension of your visa. Your extension can be 3 months or 1 year.

  15. I am UK citizen and will be land crossing from huay xai Laos into chiang Khong Thailand tomorrow and have just read about the change from 30 days to 15 days. Is this correct? If so, can I extend my visa whilst in Bangkok?

    1. You will get 30 days at the land border. Since 20 December 2013, Nationals of (G7) the following countries who enter via a land crossing or enter via an airport will be entitled to a 30-day visa exemption: UK, U.S.A, Canada, Italy, Germany, Japan, France.

    1. If your current visa is still valid, you can get in touch with an immigration office near your residence to apply for an extension. Otherwise, you will need to apply for a new visa at a Thai embassy or consulate in your home country or in a neighboring country.

    1. You may apply for an extension of temporary stay at an immigration office near your location in Thailand. They will grant you another 30 days based on your passport and the current entry stamp you received.

    1. Yes, your wife will need to accompany you at the immigration office every time you renew your visa.

    1. You can apply for an extension of temporary stay at an immigration office in Thailand before your visa on arrival expires. Please take note however that the maximum duration that you can extend is for 7 days based on your passport.

    3. No extension of visa has ever been made at the airport. Only the immigration office can do visa extensions for a fee of 1900 baht. The airport immigration can ONLY give entry and exit stamps and sometimes re-entry permits.

  24. Hi, I am currently having Internship as a trainee in a hotel on Koh Samui. I am having a Non-Immigrant Visa ED (as this is part of my collage study) for a 90 day duration visa. The visa is expired on around 24 October 16. How can I extend my visa for another 90 days because my Study Internship ends on around January?
